I'm more concerned about Whitney than about 740 dumping. Essentially proves weak demand for the chip.

The combination of the two should decisively boot S3, ATI, Number 9 et. al. down the same dark road traveled by C&T and VLSI a few years ago.

3DFX however should be escape without serious injury in the near term. Portola, though, could be a long term problem.

With all this discussion on the Diamond inventory accumulation of the Voodoo chip set I have one data point (or story clarification). When you go into ComputerCity and ask about the Diamond Board - and they look around - and then say "Don't waste your money, buy a Pure3D - its 5% faster and doesn't run as hot - plus it has a fan". So you go back to the office and take a poll of what the software developers (who have cash) are buying for home gaming - Pure3D.
