Chip,
It seems then that the few people who hold the bulk of the original collateral (real wealth) could control the direction of the monetary system....in the sense of the way their collateral is leveraged?...so why don't they determine a way to use it to build an improved "commons" rather then allow it to be misused in such a wasteful and useless manner? (remembering that each time there is a financial breakdown it wipes out lots of human energy in the form of personal labor, enthusiasm and hope. Disparage is not shortest route to a better future on this earth).

On a grand global scale what is happening is not much different then the small city in Mexico where I design tourism projects.....The mayor and his cronies take of 10-15% of off the top of every investment for personal Mercedes and the like and the infrastructure of services for the whole town deteriorates as it grows...In a similar sized city in Canada where I live that % of money for each project goes into a pool of money Called a Development Cost Charge Fund to improve the commons!

Do we need a Development Cost Charge Fund for the Global Commons?

Perhaps an even better idea would be a "tithe system" where 10 or 15% of the "leverage" goes to independent projects deemed of social benefit...with the original holders of collateral being the judge? (Hopefully they would seek good advice)

In a way I guess Soros is doing this already as a modern day "Robin Hood" by funding his Open Society Foundation with profits from his seemingly unique forays into the global financial market place..maybe his actions are in some crude way the forerunner of a new system that is needed?

Food for thought....Arni
