Dataquest is using the Chinese Government figures for unit sales. Other than that, they say demand is strong for PCs and VCD players in China..............................................

news-real.com

Dataquest said that China is the leading contributor to the growth in PC retail shipments in the region, with an 88 percent increase in home market PC volume over the first quarter of 1997. China accounted for 28 percent of the first quarter 1998 PC volume through PC stores in Asia-Pacific.

The strong growth in regional demand for PCs from PC store retailers is a direct reflection of the degree of home and small office consumption in the markets like China, Dataquest said.

In another report, Dataquest said that the fast-growing Chinese video compact disc (VCD) player production market is projected to reach 14.5 million units in 1998, sustaining a 26 percent growth.

China's VCD-player demand will surge 17.4 percent on an annual basis to reach 13.5 million units in 1998 and another 5.1 percent in 1999 to 14.2 million units. The growth trend will decline in 2000 when digital video/versatile disc (DVD) players are projected to dominate, according to Dataquest.

David:
Thanks for that great entertaining thread. I love his desire to establish Japanese sources. Also Alex Balkanski seems to come up as a source of pain for this guy.

Curious george.
