More good energy news... When the weather gets hot, we get hot! (REUTERS) Florida heatwave prompts another power advisory Florida heatwave prompts another power advisory NEW YORK, June 19 (Reuters) - Continued heat in northern Florida and soaring air conditioning demand prompted a power advisory Friday, the second in as many days. The Tampa-based Florida Reliability Coordinating Council (FRCC) issued the warning based on an electricity load later today forecast at 35,171 megawatts (MW), slightly less than the 35,807 MW forecast for Thursday. The FRCC, which oversees operation of the state's power grid, said the load leaves Florida with a 2,729-MW operating margin, the amount of reserve electricity available from local power plants. A "generating capacity advisory" is issued when temperatures exceed set levels in Florida's biggest cities. The next step would be a generating capacity alert, which is sent out when available reserves fall below the size of the biggest power plant in the state, which is currently 910 MW. Cities triggering Friday's advisory include Tallahassee, where the mercury is expected to hit 99 degrees Fahrenheit this afternoon, Orlando (98), St. Petersburg (96) and Tampa (95). "Parts of Florida got showers last night, and loads typically drop as we move into the weekend," a spokeswoman for St. Petersburg-based Florida Progress Corp. (FPC) told Reuters, explaining Friday's slight drop in demand. This is the fourth power advisory issued by the FRCC this summer. In addition to the one issued Thursday, power advisories have been sent on June 2 and June 16.
