NewKidCo/Alpha [games/edutainment]:In Perspective.

"...'It's not like software demand has faded,' said Larry Marcus, an analyst with BT Alex. Brown Inc in San Francisco. 'People think the Internet has killed it. In fact, the market is growing.'..Japan's Sony Corp., Nintendo Co....also are players. They make video game consoles for televisions and are the leading software makers for their own consoles...Video console games are expected to reach $4.2 billion in U.S. sales this year, a 24% increase...The number of U.S. homes with the latest game consoles is expected to increase 69% to 27 million this year...Games and entertainment titles are the hottest PC segment...Consolidation is the watchword. The industry's top publishers have bought smaller rivals and product lines. Size, volume and hits are key to absorbing development and marketing costs...Seven of the top 10 ten education titles last year were from Broderbund, Cendant, and Learning Co. Sony, Nintendo, Sega and Electronic Arts dominated last year's top console games...The Internet poses a bigger challenge. By '01, some 40 million non-PC devices will be accessing the Internet, IDC says. Many of those will be set-top Internet boxes, cable boxes, and game consoles...A transition to new consoles is set to start next year...The bigger task for publishers is to find their place in a new era of the Internet and interactive cable boxes...The challenge is to forge pacts with online service providers to offer titles over the Internet. 'The really big trend is the Internet and to what extent companies are able to adapt their franchises,' BT Alex. Brown's Marcus said..." [emphasis added]
