David,

It's too early to make assumptions. Ancor's products are interoperable. The SAN market alone should be large enough to entice most if not all of the big networkers to offer FC solutions.

David,

-you wrote-
As Brocade has, we assume, begun to occupy the SAN market it has raised a
question in my mind. I had understood that Ancor or Brocade switches could be
used in place of each other. I don't mean to suggest that they would be
interchangeable, but, with some software modifications I had assumed they could be
substituted one the other."

That's just the question that I posed to Cal Nelson more than six months ago. In particular, I was wondering if Ancor shouldn't get aggressive and try to demo their switch in the place of Brocade's in the Sequent application. He said that this certainly could be done without a lot of trouble, BUT, to go so far as to get the Ancor switch QUALIFIED for that application would be a major undertaking. And yes, the thought of doing this had crossed their minds.

Now, what I learned from this conversation is that despite the interoperability of the switches, there are many other tweaks that go into to optimizing a switch for a given application. And to incorporate a switch into an application and have it qualified is not a trivial thing to do. However, wouldn't it be worth doing if Ancor's switch is superior to the competition's? I would think so. Maybe they can convince a VAR or integrator to do this. Certainly Ancor should be able to undercut Brocade's prices(due to less ASIC's per port), no?
