I was in a bookstore tonight, and I read the review for Quest by EGM and The Game Buyer. The EGM review was one of the most negative reviews I've seen. This is not new--the review is the same one that everyone was worried about a few weeks ago. The reviewers said "This part really stinks," or "The ending is where it really sucked." Or something like that. There was more sucking and stinking in that review than any I can recall. It was actually kind of funny. Thankfully, the Game Buyer's review was somewhat favorable. It gave Quest 4 of 5 stars and said "BUY IT!" Both mags believed that graphics were the best part of the game, and both agreed that the game was too short/easy and simplistic. But the Game Buyer's critic seemed to understand that not all gamers are hard core Zelda fans. It said that Quest is probably not suitable for hard core gamers, or anyone looking for the next FF7 or Zelda. But it is a good game for beginners or young gamers. The simple and easy criticism of THQ games is not new. Ray Tracers was said to be a good game, but it can be finished in a couple of hours, making it more economical to rent than buy. After all, why pay $35 for a game that can be finished in 5 nights for $6 from Blockbuster. THQ needs to make sure that gameplay is in-depth and lengthy enough so that a player needs to buy it to finish it. The review for Saga was very favorable (from EGM). It was rated a 7.5 or so. They said that the game was a little short, but the battle engine was cool, despite being utilized to less than its potential. Overall, they said that Granstream is a buy, but nothing great. What I liked is that they wanted to see a sequel for it. Perhaps THQ will obtain sequel rights to Saga for next year, and forget about Quest 2. The EGM reviewers said that Quest looked like it was rushed to market. Hmmmm... I saw a preview for Brunswick that looked good. Its success for the PC will be based largely on its pricing, I believe. If BASS and Brunswick come out at $30 in retail stores, they'll do very well. Todd
