Bob Sturgeon, please forgive my error. Meant to address my Evolution is Religion note to All, but since I just got on SI I'm unskilled and messed up. It's clear that we agree on the matter.

Bob:

I dare you to pick up some up-to-date books on astronomy and cosmology. I am not lying. Our sun is a third generation star and stars much older than ours have already come and gone. Their remains are white dwarves or neutron stars. When you look up at the stars in the night sky you are looking back in time. Some of the star light you can see with the naked eye left those stars 1,000s or 10,000s of years ago before reaching here today. This is true even though light travels at 186,000 mps. By looking at different parts of the universe we can see stars being born -- in our galaxy and others. These are not theories but observable facts -- whether you choose to deny it or not, they still exist.

Since there are stars much older than our sun, it is likely the universe has civilizations much older than ours. So old that we would seem almost at the level of animals to them. Some so advanced they may not even consider us intelligent. Some so radically different, they may not even consider us "life". I daresay if any of them have a god or gods, it/they will be markedly different than your conception of one.
