This is from a personal message reply:
James Dale Davidson, along with Lord William Rees-Mogg, have written several booklets about world events. They claim to have forseen (in 1986, I believe) breakup of Soviet Union, stock collapse in 1987, Savings and Loan bankruptcies, etc. A while back they began to "predict" world-wide depression, panic, end of welfare state -- basically, a total economic collapse. Davidson has a newsletter, I believe, in which he claims to have "experts" in many fields all around the world so he can get the "real" scoop first.
I am at a quandary with regards to him. You see, I, too, believe that we will have a tumultuous time as we get near 2000. My beliefs, however, relate to Biblical predictions and prophecy and how they tie in with world events -- not Davidson's predictions. As far as his investment acumen, I believe if you contact the Hulbert Digest, you can get a report on his newsletter performance. The last time I saw it, which was about 1 1/2 years ago, his recos were not doing very well.
So, I think he has a gift with words, he is on the right track with world events (although he does not know the real reasons why), but so far, he has not proven himself in the investment milieu.

ps if you are interested in prophecy, the Bible says that (and keep in mind it said this hundreds of years ago, not having the clues that Davidson and others have at their disposal) we would see a few things happen right before Christ would return and the Judgement:
1. Israel must become a nation again -- happened in 1948 when for hundreds of years no one thought it possible
2. There would be a great falling away from the Church and its teachings -- In the last 20 years this has taken place for the first time in history
3. The major thing that will happen is the appearance of the anti-Christ. Many think that Christians will be "raptured" away before this appearance, but there are things that have to be in place before his appearance could happen -- rapture or not. Almost all are now a reality, and when you consider when they were predicted, it is amazing to me that current prognosticators don't see the Biblical connection. It says when the anti-Christ shows up it will be to calm the world fears in relation to economic, political, and religious worries. He will UNITE all of these -- a seeming impossibility for the last few thousand years, but not now. Religions have only recently become "tolerant" of each other. The "new age" philosophy is to "accept" everyone no matter what they believe -- this is very new and very distinct. The world monetary system he will unite into one system. He will cause everyone to have a mark (identification). It will serve the function that all cash and all credit cards do today -- the technological ability is available now for the FIRST time in history, and you will see us move rapidly toward that goal. He will unite the world politically. With out getting too deep, you will see an alignment of the Mid-East countries with Russia (note all treaties are now in place for the FIRST time in history) against Israel. Then, some very minute details are now in place for the first time which others have missed. The Bible speaks of a rebuilding of the Temple in Israel and renewed religious rituals by very specific rules. One requires a "red heifer". This is a completely red heifer from black and white parents. One now exists for the first time in hundreds of years. It is being protected and will be ready for ceremony within the next 1 1/2 years, I believe. Skeptics have already said it is not a pure red, but those that know, know the truth. Panic is very real in regards to this animal. In order for people to willingly accept the anti-Christ, his mark, etc., I believe that the world events must set up a desperate situation -- everything we know must get very bad. One thing which could greatly add to this scenario is the Year 2000 date problem. To me, it makes great irony -- man has always wanted to be gods, and it is through computers where man thinks he will attain that status. When man built the tower of Babel, they said they would be gods. God confused their language. Is it not humorous that something as simple as a date will bring down all of man's hopes of being gods? There are many other things in relation to viruses, weather patterns, politics, societal beliefs, military alignments, etc. which all point to the end of the age. Many get uncomfortable and say, "someone has always said the end of the world is coming" or "I don't think about that -- it is in God's hands". These are true statements, but God also said to "seal up the Book" until it was about to come to pass, and then the meanings would be made clear. It says no one knows the day or hour, but you SHOULD know the season by the signs. To me it is obvious. It will all come together in God's time. It says it will be like in the days of Noah right before the end. People will be marrying and playing and not even see the "flood" coming even with Noah (signs) right there in their midst. I have invested in Y2K companies because I feel if anyone has a chance of making money before the panic, they do. I guess I should just forget investments, but you have to live and help others in the meantime, so why not invest here as opposed to anywhere? We shall see what we shall see.
