Thanks, I really appreciate your time in answering so thoroughly.

According to Ameritrade, they do go out to the street to try to find the shares, but I don't know how hard they look. I like your idea of shorting at the open assuming no big price drop, that sounds like a good strategy since they have to match up orders at that point and there might be more likelihood of getting filled (NYSE or AMEX). Also, from what I can tell, the opening trade is always counted as an uptick, so a short would immediately become possible at that point.

The more I look around, the more it seems that there are numerous stocks that are good shorts even in a strong market, as they are fundamentally flawed, and have a bleak future, at least short to medium term, if not permanently. Hopefully, I can contribute some good candidates to this thread as I become more versed in this pursuit.
