Dog,

1)" There was a policy change which set the goal at 4 weeks across the board, which was driven by the fact that some of the big channel partners have not been able to meet customer demand with lower inventory. "

2) "What does reduction in price protection have to do with inventory levels?"

Read it for yourself from the CRN article:

"Beginning May 15, price protection dropped from unlimited price protection on all Compaq product in channel inventory down to four weeks for desktops and notebooks and six weeks for servers and workstations. Beginning July 1, that will fall to three weeks and five weeks respectively. And on Sept. 1, price protection terms will drop permanently to two weeks for desktop and mobile products and four weeks on servers and workstations, he said. "

The incentives for taking excess inventory are being reduced.

3)" How does this square with 4 weeks inventory at the end of June?"

What happened to the inventory bubble? Was it written off? Was it sold to Africa or the middle east? Where did the inventory bubble go?
There have been a number of differing reports on this subject published in the last month. They are in my previous posts.

4) " I think that your posts on these issues have gone beyond simple contrarian opinion and are actively misleading people on this thread as to the position and actions of the largest player in the market in which Dell operates."

Sorry, you are irritated. I take it you do not want me to raise these issues. That is interesting....
