Tomcat -
I also heard that CPQ will end up throwing some but not all of the baby out with the bath water while trying to steamline DEC

From what I can see so far it has been mostly bathwater. There will be a lot more CPQ heads moved out before this is all done. I think CPQ senior management is going to use this as an opportunity to cull some of the old line CPQ people who just don't 'get' the idea that CPQ's old model will not win in today's environment.

There will be some good DEC people who will end up being let go also, simply because CPQ has a much different set of criteria for what a successful business needs to be in the way of cost management. DEC apparantly had a lot of little pockets of smart, skilled but not very productive people, and not all of them can find a home in the new CPQ.

There is also some deadwood left over from years of management cronyism at DEC, and those people will have a hard time finding a place in the new organization.

I am pretty optimistic that CPQ will retain most of the valuable DEC people. That's different than saying they will retain most of the good people due to the difference in business models between DEC and the new CPQ.
