Michelle,

hmmm ... lots to chew on in what you say.

I'm probably not a good person to judge Walker, since I didn't have much to do with apps back in those days. I have a foggy memory that he wasn't considered a real nice person, and someone had to agree to all the bad business that was booked on his watch. But I also seem to have a foggy memory that he was considered a bit of a visionary in the apps business. And I agree, he built with Forms because that was what he had ... it just put Oracle behind the power curve when the market shifted to GUI.

I think the apps business had fallen apart by the time Lane got there, and my impression was there lots of unhappy customers.

I do agree with you that Lane et al could have id'ed the problems with the apps business years ago, and I'm sure they did. My memory was Oracle was cannon fodder on the big deals (except the team in the SF Bay Area) ... always a finalist, seldom the winner vs. SAP ... I'm sure this has been abundantly covered on this thread. And PSFT taking more and more of the business from '93 - '94 on.

But, your points sound well taken ...

Peter
