"They buy the stock on the open market" Which is why MSFT is such a great stock to own. Limited supply, constant demand from the ESOP, plus constant demand from the occasional crazy who shorts the stock then purchases MSFT at premium prices to meet their margin calls. There's also amazing upside potential on the remote chance they are broken up into individual MSFT power-houses. Microsoft has the cash flow to buy their way into success in virtually any business. There's a lot of flexibility and hidden power in a business that's debt-free.
