I would also think that any american-based dram operation would "keel over" from 1. american labor costs, 2. no government subsidies of operations, and 3. the killer american dollar which makes it difficult to sell finished goods at a competitive price outside of the U.S. market. Where am I wrong with this point?

Skeeter, my premises are very simple, if MU is to be around for the next few years they got to fight the DRAM wars. This acquisition put them in a much better position to fight this war. I do not know what the outcome will be, but this acquisition tilts the situation in favor of MU not in "disfavor".
