Looks like my time clock is off again. y2k? I'm still tryng to adjust for the monthly change, let alone the century. :o)

<Are you considering attending?

Yes

<General Magic's absence is noteworthy.

Not really. GMGC buys the speech rec, they don't build it. Last year, they said there were about 10 ASR engines and they all had ruffly the same abilites. They'd use the best for the best price.

The package GMGC is building called Portico, is more similar to a Yahoo with a voice based user interface. They have built their command structure called Magic Talk in a way to use thousands of phrase combinations input through ASR. It's what they do after they get the command that is important.

The are building in a lot of functions to tie in messaging, scheduling, address books, browsing internet and VPN, and they talk about integrating systems like SAP.

Eventually they'll have "push" like items similar to other major portals like Yahoo such as stock portfolio's, sports news, astrology, etc. Then, they will go way beyond today's current portal services with agent based transactions. Here, you'll see a program much, of which has been pioneered by GMGC, that creates an agent that takes a request much like a RFP and goes out to other agents residing on other systems. These agents then negotiate, and renegotiate, the best fitting response to the RFP. An example could be a information search, or a financial transaction such as find me the cheapest price on a modem card with the quickest delivery time. They have better examples on the GMGC web page.

It's all pretty deep stuff. I try not to get carried away, but if it works this will be huge. I think they have enough differentiation and lead on competitve offerings to make a big move quickly. They have great marketing alliances with some of the biggest cellular phone companies in the US. They are starting service in July. I believe there is an advantage for all phone companies to offer the service, so we should see more and more companies jump on board as the system is proved, (or disproved), eventually leading to 100% availability through all phone service providers.

You will see demo's of Portico in the malls before Christmas. It will be a revolution of how we use our phones.

This is not a speech recognition product. GMGC's absence from this ASR trade show isn't really so noteworthy.

Regards,

Mark
