Vantive To Acquire Wayfarer

By Tom Stein, TechInvestor

Front-office automation vendor The Vantive
Corp. announced Friday a definitive
agreement to acquire Wayfarer
Communications, a company that specializes in
Web-based information delivery. Vantive said
it expects to record acquisition-related
charges of about $11.5 million.

Vantive, in Santa Clara, Calif., said it plans to
use the Wayfarer technology to create a new
product called VantiveVista that will pull
information from various sources -- including
core Vantive applications, enterprise
resource-planning systems such as Oracle or
PeopleSoft, and Web news feeds and articles
-- and display that data in summary form. The
product is expected to be available in the
fourth quarter.

Users will be able to program the application
to retrieve only the information they are most
interested in. A salesperson, for example, can
be notified of shipping delays to customers,
or that a certain customer has just been
placed on credit hold. Salespeople will also be
able to use VantiveVista to check the latest
news releases or news stories about their
clients.

VantiveVista will be sold as a stand-alone
product. The first version will provide
interfaces to core Vantive applications, as
well as Microsoft Outlook and Oracle's
financial applications. Future versions will
offer interfaces to PeopleSoft and SAP. No
pricing has been announced.
