I don't think much for the chances of ASND to make a play, but I would attribute this morning's strong move (>5% by both TLAB and CIEN) to speculation that CSCO is back in the game to take over the combined company. In the NY Times today (sorry, I don't have the link; I still read it the ol' fashioned way), CSCO CEO Chambers said that they have given up on making a merger of equals with LU or Nortel, but he did say that they will make smaller acquisitions in the telephone gear market. What better "small" company than TLAB? It's a perfect match technology-wise and would give CSCO instant access to telcos through TLAB/CIEN's sales force. IMHO, Birck should not sell out for anything less than 1-for-1 CSCO for TLAB stock--which would give us 35% premium on TLAB shares. It's funny that everything is converging; I started off with some CIEN, some TLAB, and some CSCO. I think eventually my entire portfolio is going to be CSCO. Oh well. Can't stop progress.
