SCSI host adapters

Does your 2940 U2W have two separate channels, SCSI busses? One channel for 16 bit SCSI devices and one channel for wide SCSI devices. Or are all 4 connectors on the 2940 U2W connected internally to the same bus?

The AHA 2940 U2W is a single channel host adapter. Adaptec makes a two dual channel host adapters in the 2940 series, the AHA 2940U dual and the AHA-2940UW dual. All of the 3940 series is dual channel.

Have you tried your SCSI controller with devices connected externally and internally to one channel.?

Yes. I have two internal ultra harddrives connected to the ultra segment and an external drive connected to the same segment but originating from a different connector. The external drive is terminated and one of the two internal drives is terminated. There are still two connectors on the ULTRA 2 segment.

The board diagram shows an AIC-3860 chip between the two segments.

from the manual

Bus Segments on the SCSI Card 2940U2W

The SCSI Card 2940 U2W features Adaptec SpeedFlex technology. SpeedFlex technology ensures that you get the most performance from your Ultra2 SCSI peripherals by electronically isolating the Ultra2 SCSI segment from the Ultra SCSI segment on the SCSI bus. With the SpeedFlex advantage, the SCSI Card 2940 U2W can support Ultra2 SCSI peripherals at speeds up to 80 Mbytes/sec while simultaneously supporting Wide Ultra/Ultra (legacy) peripherals at speeds up to 40 MBytes/sec

The dual channel adapter may have been better for my needs. I do not really know. There were no dual channel adapters in stock at the time of my purchase. I believe they are very new. I also believe the Ultra2 card is very new.

Termination

There are four connectors on the board. If one connects to one of the connectors then there must be termination on that cable. If one were to use all board connectors there would be four terminators. The board has auto termination for itself so if one does not connect a cable to the board no termination is necessary.

I have two Ultra2 connectors unused. One is a hard external connector and one is internal. Both of these are on the Ultra2 segment. If Ultra2 harddrives are available that significantly outperform Ultra and Ultra Wide drives and the price is reasonable I will try one as a performance drive. If Ultra2 drives are not up my alley I can still use the two connectors on the Ultra2 segment for Ultra and Ultra Wide drives.

My large case is not so large any more. There is room for more drives but not room for many more cables. One advantage to Ultra2 SCSI is it allows for longer cable lengths. I can come off the external Ultra 2 connector with a cable to another case dedicated to Ultra2 drives.
