Dale -
I understand cable is considerably faster than ADSL
not correct - cable modems share access so the bandwidth available to an individual user is dependent on overall pipe usage. But even in raw terms, there are 2 current DSL speed standards, and more in process. Of the 2 current standards (1.5 MBPS and 8 MBPS) only the 1.5 has less absolute bandwidth than cable. And in backchannel capacity (upload capacity) even 1.5 MBPS DSL is considerably faster than cable.

The advantage cable has is that the infrastructure is already in place for many users, which means that the adoption curve is better near term.
