Sorry, my crystal ball isn't that good. :)

The point is that there is a lot of pessimism about the PC sector in general and CPQ in particular out there right now, which is always a good sign that we are at or near a bottom. The press has pretty much swallowed MSFT's lowered-expectations line for Windows 98 but I know that folks like me who have been nursing 3 year old Win95 systems have been chomping at the bit to upgrade for the past several months.

The general PC buying public isn't stupid either. Nobody is going to buy a last-gasp Win95 system when Win98 is a matter of days or weeks away. That psychology will change dramatically come next Thursday with the official Win98 launch. Watch for the surprise by the talking-heads on CNBC about how suddenly the PC sector has turned and how "nobody saw this coming". Meanwhile watch MSFT do another round of "aw shucks" downplaying of their earnings which will once again "surprise" everyone.

CPQ's 2Q98 earnings are pretty much a formality at this point. I'm not expecting anything dramatic until their release other than a continued trading range with a more pronounced upward bias. By the time "back to school" rolls around things should be cooking, however.
