PBS to start HDTV shows with specials in November

Knight-Ridder News Service
------------------------------------------------------------------------
PBS will launch the next generation of TV technology with high-definition programming during "PBS Digital Week" Nov. 9 to 13.

On Nov. 9, it will air Chihuly Over Venice, spotlighting the work of renowned glassblower Dale Chihuly. The same night, at 10:30, Bob "Digital Bob" Cringley (Triumph of the Nerds) will explain HDTV for the technologically impaired.

On Nov. 10 and 11, Ken Burns' documentary on architect Frank Lloyd Wright will be broadcast to stations with "enhanced digital interactive content." Beginning in December, PBS will air at least one prime-time HDTV program each month.

Other specials on tap: This Far by Faith, a six-part historical series on the African-American religious experience; the five-part Secret Life of the Brain; and The 30-Second Candidate, about American political advertising.

Poitier in remake: Oscar winner Sidney Poitier will star in an updated ABC version of the 1992 drama David & Lisa. It will air next season under the "Oprah Winfrey Presents" banner. Lukas Haas (Witness) and Brittany Murphy (Clueless) will play the teen lovers helped by the psychiatrist (Poitier) who runs their group home.

Ronald Reagan: In cooperation with former first lady Nancy Reagan, TBS is developing a four-hour miniseries on Ronald Reagan. The ex-president will have no role in the project. ABC also is doing a miniseries on the Reagans -- without her input.

Hostile takeover, right. Management should be more worried about hostile shareholders.
