OT> MG: Obviously our opinions differ on this matter. I have hired hundreds of bassists from all parts of America. And while some were smarter than others, I dare not call any of them stupid. Usually I write every note and nuance out for bass and prefer someone that can play exactly what I write [same for drums]. If they play the groove exactly as written AND with a great feel, we all go home early. If they try to fake it [or can't read it], or assume they have a better idea of what should be played...not only is there tension, but the session goes overtime and often ends up scrapped. And re-dos come out of my own pocket. So I label them a hack and never hire them or recommend them for anything ever again. That to me is the difference between those SERIOUS about their respective instrument and those that "play" at their instrument. It is unfortunate that those with the better hairstyles, jokes, drugs, relatives and party manner tend to prosper, while many monsters go unnoticed. LA is the worst for this. Different schools put out those with varying abilities and drive. The college study does help establish the communication skills and work ethic. These can help make life easier for those working with that person, though some exceptions come to mind. RE FEEL: It varies depending on region. West Coast players tend to be stiffer and almost never swing or groove as well as East Coast players [NYC being the best]. Nashville is a planet all its own. Forget reading music or your knowledge gained elsewhere. The number system, country vibe and feel is like nothing found anywhere else in the world [though I will never get used to the ending or coda being called the "outro," as it relates to intro]. To each his own... Rande Is
