Object Design's ObjectStore Deployed By Open Market

Internet Commerce Engine for Building Industrial Catalogs Utilizes ObjectStore for High Performance, Scalability, and Extendibility

BURLINGTON, Mass., June 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Object Design, Inc. (Nasdaq: ODIS - news), the leading object database company, today announced that Open Market (Nasdaq: OMKT - news), a leading provider of Internet commerce software, has deployed the Object Design(R) ObjectStore(R) database in its LiveCommerce(TM) application for building commerce-ready, industrial-strength catalogs.

LiveCommerce enables business-to-business manufacturers and distributors to enhance customer relationships while reducing costs and increasing revenue through high-performance, customizable, on-line industrial-strength catalogs. ObjectStore is embedded in LiveCommerce and stores and manages all data on a catalog's products and their attributes.

Open Market selected ObjectStore for its high performance at navigating and retrieving data from very large catalogs, and its flexibility so users can personalize catalog presentation and pricing for specific customers. In addition, Open Market utilizes ObjectStore's unique Cache-Forward(TM) architecture for distributing data and database processing across LiveCommerce's distributed architecture. This reduces network traffic and contention for database server usage, enabling LiveCommerce to scale to thousands of concurrent users with no performance degradation. It also saves Open Market customers money because it allows LiveCommerce to run on smaller, less-expensive servers.

According to Gail Goodman, vice president of Open Market's Commerce Products Group, ''Industrial catalogs can include tens of thousands of products, each with up to 100 interrelated attributes. Performing high-speed searches on that amount of interrelated data absolutely required ObjectStore with its Cache-Forward architecture. ObjectStore is critical to the success of LiveCommerce.''

''We are very pleased to have been selected by Open Market, one of the leaders in the Internet commerce market, to be the underlying data management system for its LiveCommerce industrial-strength catalog application,'' said Larry Alston, vice president of marketing at Object Design. ''ObjectStore is the only database with Cache-Forward architecture for bringing high performance, scalability, and flexibility to component-based, distributed applications like LiveCommerce.''
