The punishment is destruction, Chris. "Who shall; suffer punishment, even eternal destruction from the face of the Lord." 2 Thess 1:9

"The GIFT of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ, our Lord" Romans 6:23 If you already have it you don't need the gift. God created Adam with a right to everlasting life on earth, conditional on obedience. Death was the penalty for disobedience, not eternal life somewhere else, as we read in Genesis 2 & 3:

"Let us make man, and let him have dominion over the earth"
"Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth"

"Out of the ground made Jehovah God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; The tree of life also in the middle of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil."
The tree of life would signal God's guarantee of eternal life, would have been unnecessary if Adam already it. They were expelled from Eden to keep them from eating of it. "and now, lest he put forth his hand and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever -- therefore Jehovah God sent him forth from the garden of Eden."

"But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it; for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die." Restriction from this single tree gave man a way to show his love and gratitude to Jehovah. A trifle, but Eve started woman's lib; the consequences were fatal:

"All the Adam lived were 930 years, and he died."
"A day with the Lord is 1,000 years."
If Adam had not sinned he would be alive today, he died in a day.

In the Kingdom: "The righteous shall never be removed, but the wicked shall not inhabit in the earth." "The righteous shall inherit the land, and dwell therein forever." Proverbs 10:30 Psalm 37:29 KJV

Christ's ransoml restores fulfillment of Jehovah's purpose for the human race. God already had angels, [Job 38: 4-7] now he wanted humans. "He hath swallowed up death for ever; and the Lord Jehovah will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the reproach of his people will he take away from off all the earth ... we will be glad and rejoice in his salvation." Isaiah 24:6-9
