ALAMEDA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 22, 1998--

GX 550 Delivers Industry's First STM-16/OC-48 Support, Broad Service Delivery Capabilities and High Availability Levels inside the DFN network

Ascend Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ:ASND), a leader in wide area networking (WAN) solutions for providers and users of the Public Network, today announced that Deutsche Telekom Systemloesungen GmbH will deploy GX 550 ATM "Smart" Core Switches for the Gigabit Testbed of the German Research Network (Deutsches Forschungsnetz/DFN), the computer-based communications infrastructure for research, science, education, and culture in Germany. This network will deliver STM-16/OC-48 (2.5 Gigabit/Gbps) asychronous transfer mode (ATM) core connections that will carry video, voice and data -- linking a number of German universities and research centers.

"Ascend's GX 550 ATM Core Switches are the only switches available that can provide us with the first 2.5 Gigabit ATM connection that we need, enabling us to showcase the leading edge technology of the DFN network," said Dr. Kaufmann, project manager, DFN.

The GX 550 "Smart" Core ATM switch uniquely delivers STM-16/OC-48 trunking capacity and scales up to 160 STM-1/OC-3 interfaces. The GX 550 is a carrier-class switch designed for the core of the New Public Network, the new infrastructure service providers are building to provide more sophisticated, high-volume data services to their customers. The GX 550 incorporates end-to-end Quality of Service (QoS) and advanced networking features enabling service providers to offer sophisticated ATM services directly from the core network, something service providers have never been able to do before with traditional core switches.

In addition, the GX 550 incorporates functionality traditionally provided by legacy SONET/SDH and Digital Cross-connect Systems to offer a new solution for high-speed trunking, allowing service providers to maximize bandwidth while reducing network and operational costs. Along with all Ascend products, the GX 550 is managed under the unified Navis family of network management products.

Eduard Beier, project engineer for Deutsche Telekom's subsidiary, DeTe System, said, "The Ascend GX 550 switches are a key component of our industry leading platform for delivering voice, video, and data services. We are very happy to be able to build an ATM multiservice network that will service the current and future needs of our customers."

"The German research network is one of the world's most forward looking communications networks. The GX 550 provides the DFN with the leading edge technology required for next-generation networks, and also saves them significant costs by eliminating the need for using legacy transmission equipment such as SONET/SDH and DCS hardware," said Frank Klafki, Ascend's territory manager.

"The GX 550 does more than add speed and capacity to the backbone -- we're redefining the capabilities of the service provider's core network," said Dan Smith, Ascend's executive vice president and general manager, Core Systems Division. "In addition to STM-16/OC-48 trunking, the DFN can leverage the GX 550's unique combination of core switch capacity and scalability, with edge switch service delivery."
