Disney has pursued a different strategy with Mulan, there has been less advertising and hype compared with past offerings and it has opened on fewer screens. Yet from your own figures she seems to have surpassed recent efforts.

Further, while the "X-Files" may have scored better this weekend $$$-wise as its TV fans rushed in, Mulan probably drew a larger audience. Audience surveys show that "X" has drawn few beyond its core TV audience, showing a decidedly limited appeal. Expanding on that base should be hard for to do since "X" got mixed reviews and solved little from a plot perspective.

It is a good bet that Armageddon will nuke "X" on July 1. So "X" better make its money quickly - it has really only one more weekend left to do so.

WSJ:

The conspiracy-minded weren't the only ones at the movies as "Mulan" had
the best opening for a Disney animation epic in years with $23 million....
The film took in a respectable $7,964 average per theater even though
many of the tickets were sold at discounted children's rates....

Over at Disney, executives were boasting that ''Mulan'' yielded the best exit poll data for any Disney movie -- animated or live action -- in four or five years.

''It's a dream come true,'' said Phil Barlow, president of Disney's Buena Vista Pictures distribution unit.

Almost 90 percent of viewers gave it a ''definitely recommend'' rating, and Barlow cited reports of children wanting to see the movie again -- immediately.
