Whatever the sales of Win 98 are projected to be [which includes people buying copies for their existing PCs], I do think its introduction will result in a large increase in computer purchases. Saturday I went to Best Buy, Staples, and Office Max just to check-out the PCs. The shelves of all three stores were practically empty. Sales people at all three stores told me they have intentionally kept their inventories low in anticipation of the introduction of Win 98 when the manufacturers ship their machines with Win 98 pre-installed.

From what the sales people said, there are _many_ people out there in the market for PCs who do not want one with Win 95 even if they will get the upgrade to 98 for free. They do not like installing software, are basically afraid of messing thing up.

Granted, I only went to three stores that cater to the home market in one city, but if what I saw and was told applies to other areas of the USA, this could bode well for PC manufacturers even if does not help MSFT very much.
