Pfizer Gets Swiss Approval to Sell Impotence Drug Viagra

Bern, June 22 (Bloomberg) -- Pfizer Inc. got approval to
sell its impotency treatment Viagra in Switzerland, the Swiss
drug authority said. It's the product's first approval in Europe
and the third altogether for the drug, which broke sales records
when it was introduced in the U.S.

More than 1 million Viagra prescriptions were written in
the U.S. within a weeks of its launch in May, and Swiss
pharmacies have already dispensed Viagra, even before the
approval, on ''emergency'' prescriptions. It is also sold in
Thailand.

Viagra is popular because it's easier to use than the
injections, penile insertions, and vacuum tubes previously
available for treating impotence.

An advisory panel to the European Medicines Evaluation
Agency recently recommended that the drug be approved in the
European Union, and full approval is expected in the next few
months.

Pfizer shares fell 2 7/8 to 111 1/2 in the U.S. Friday.
Still, the shares have doubled in the past year on optimism
about Viagra sales. The announcement by Swiss Control Office for
Medication was made before the U.S. market opened.
