Dipy - the ban on coke and pepsi is symbolic. Essentially it says that we can and will retaliate against any sanctions with sanctions of our own. I dont have any figures, but India still has a billion consumers almost same as china. But china restricts all trade till it can do so at their own terms. In that respect they are far better business people and also have a lot of patience.

I remember when I used to sell PC's back in 1982 I had a chinese family come to buy a system. They bargained me down to my cost (not including incentives). Finally when I billed and the computer spit out an invoice with the sales tax at about 3259.85 they wanted to negotiate the 85 cents (paying by check or credit card - not cash). I literally threw them out of the place. But my respect for their negotiation skills and patience shot up.

I have also seen ladies from India go into a dept store and negotiate, and get, the price of items they buy. When was the last time you saw anyone go into MAcy's and ask for a price different than the one on the sticker?? And did you insist the salesperson get someone else who cna make the decision.

I don't know the figures but may be you can check with their web site see they have any info. They both do have nice size investments in the country particularly Pepsi as they are also into food processing etc.

Anyway I think the reaction in UP is in response to the sanctions imposed by the U.S,justifiably or not I can't say and from the way it looks this is not a nationwide phenomenon but rather restricted to BJP strongholds in the North where the Swadeshi doctrine seems to be stronger among the uppity babus who probably are the consumers of these products to begin with. I could be wrong though.
