'If some health care IT execs don't start swallowing the necessary year 2000 pill soon, there may be some hospitals ending up in the IT critical-care unit. More than 30 percent of hospitals responding to a recent survey lack an implementation plan to deal with the year 2000 situation, according to the Fourth Annual Healthcare Technology Survey, conducted by Chicago-based law firm Gordon & Glickson P.C. The firm gathered information from 170 hospital executives, the majority of them representing individual hospitals with 200 or more beds.

According to the survey results, 40 percent do not expect to complete their year 2000 repairs until after 1998. Fifty-four percent say they have reviewed contracts for year 2000 compliance, 60 percent say they have surveyed vendors, and 63 percent say they have begun to implement updates.
