Tobacco shares climb after Fla. verdict reversal

NEW YORK, June 22 (Reuters) - Shares of major U.S. tobacco companies rose in after-hours
trading Monday on word of the reversal of a verdict against the industry in a smoking-related
lawsuit.

The decision by a Florida appeals court Monday overturned a 1996 ruling against Brown &
Williamson Tobacco Corp. (quote from Yahoo! UK & Ireland: BATS.L) in a lawsuit brought on behalf
of a sick smoker.

The defeat had been the tobacco industry's first since a jury in 1988 awarded $400,000 to the
family of Rose Cipollone of New Jersey. The 1988 award was also eventually overturned on
appeal.

Shares of Philip Morris Cos. Inc. (MO - news) rose to 40 in after-hours trading from 39 at the
close of New York Stock Exchange trading, according to traders. RJR Nabisco Holdings Corp.
(RN - news) climbed to 25-7/8 from an NYSE close of 24-15/16.
