Rambus DRAM product being tested by Intel
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., June 22 (Reuters) - Chip designer Rambus Inc. on Monday said Intel Corp. (INTC - news) has begun testing devices that use Direct Rambus technology, which is capable of increasing memory chip speed.
Engineering testing is underway on Direct Rambus DRAM devices produced by Toshiba Corp. (6502.T) and LG Semicon, Rambus said.

In addition, Rambus said PC makers Dell Computer Corp. (DELL - news) and Compaq Computer Corp. (CPQ - news) confirmed they planned to ship PCs using Direct Rambus technology for main memory in 1999.

Rambus shares rose sharply on Monday, trading up 7-11/16 at 46-1/2 near the close, setting a session high.

Rambus said the announcements are on track with the technology development program disclosed in December 1996 that Intel platforms will use Direct Rambus memory starting in 1999.

''We expect to see several more vendors delivering Direct RDRAM silicon in the next quarter and we believe the industry is still on track to ship Direct RDRAM memory technology in PC platforms in 1999,'' and Intel spokesman said in a release.

The company said it completed the Direct RDRAM interface design in February and distributed it simultaneously to all of its DRAM licensees.

Over 50 companies are committed to delivering Direct Rambus technology within their products, including DRAM manufacturers representing the suppliers to more than 96 percent of the global DRAM market, Rambus said.
