Unfortunately, I was a little over enthusiastic in my post on Diamond. Here's what they said in the TDFX press release:

==============
Perspective from Diamond Multimedia

''Diamond Multimedia's move to feature 3Dfx's Banshee technology in future Monster products enhances our on-going partnership with 3Dfx to provide the most innovative gaming technology to the PC user,'' said Scott Vouri, vice president and general manager of core graphics at Diamond Multimedia.'' The Monster 3D, both 1st and 2nd generation, has been the number one selling 3D graphics accelerator in retail for the last ten consecutive months and we anticipate the PC consumer will experience the same level of intensity and quality with this next generation of 2D/3D entertainment.''
===============

Essentially Diamond said, "We will come out with a Banshee board at some time in the future." This is very different from what I was hoping for. Imagine the impact of a separate press release saying "The Diamond Monster Voodoo Banshee board will be available in stores by the end of August for around $139. It will contain 16MB of video RAM and will support resolutions up to 1600x1200. etc. etc." Imagine a similar release from CREAF at the same time. The effect would have been _much_ more dramatic.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure that a press release from Diamond and Creative Labs will come out soon (tomorrow?) but the question of "Why all the Banshee secrecy?" remains.

The more I think about it, the madder I get. WHAT WAS ANNOUNCED TODAY COULD HAVE BEEN ANNOUNCED AT E3!!! There's obviously been no change to the specs since then. Did a planned joint announcement fall through? Lord, I hope not.

If people are wondering if I am schizophrenic ;-), let me explain that I _LOVE_ the technical people at TDFX. They are creating great technology and they are why I am long. Its the strategy for packaging and positioning this great technology that frustrates me - i.e., the marketers and the management. It probably frustrates the techincal people also.
