Clearly, CS is preparing to put itself up for sale. Acquiring these companies is probably part of a deal with a potential suitor (CPQ?).
These acquisitions will now help a potential suitor to more easily digest the new CS, without having to make further acquisitions on its own. These "write downs" can be taken now while the stock price is depressed. If Wall street approves of CS's direction, the acquisition will go more smoothly.

Also, why are some of you people shorting a stock with possibly 2 points of downside and 10 points or more of upside? Risk/Reward seems limited.
