It would be like you trying to charge $2,000 for a cheap VCR again. Once you spoil the consumer with low prices they won't go back.

Steve,

That could be. It reminds me of what Andy Grove said about the Sub 1000 PC's. "Once the Ginie is out of the bottle, it won't go back in."

Steve,

RDRAM has similar costs to regular DRAM. I understand that the basic DRAM cell design/architecture is identical. Only in the I/O area did the Rambus guys come up with a clever I/O approach. The die cost penalty is sub 5%.

In fact if you read the release the suppliers came up with working parts within 3-4 months of getting the final specs from Rambus in February.

Obviously the pricing will be set by the market and there will be an initial premium on pricing but depending upon supply/demand this price difference will become nominal.

On the issue of RAMBUS as an investment: The company came up with a very clever I/O scheme which is being adopted by all the DRAM guys. Unfortunately the valuation today is based on huge sales of DRAMs (which will happen over next 3-6 years) but what then. They have nothing else and no other major products that I am aware of. This is probably a great trading stock to ride up and then at some point short as shorely at some point the stock will drop to nothing.
