There is an article in my local paper about legislation recently introduced by Rep. Bill McCollum, Florida Republican, to allow private companies to set up shop in federal prisons and use inmate labor. Only 25% of prisoners work in shops which now make goods for use in federal agencies. There is a waiting list to work at the 99 factories run by Federal Prisons Industries, Inc, which is part of the Bureau of Prisons. McCollum wants to allow private companies expand work opportunities and to help support the booming prison population.

The bill is opposed by labor unions and minority-owned businesses who are afraid it could take jobs away from the private sector. There is a provision in the bill that would require federal agencies to buy a certain percentage from prison industries. Rep. Martin Meehan, D-Mass, is against the bill.

Studies have shown that prison industry workers are less likely to commit crimes and have a better chance of gaining employment after they are released.

I still think this company will be ontrack to set up 7 facilities by the end of this year. Hopefully this will fulfill his personal goals of $10 million in revenue, with 10-15% profit margins. Next year should look even better.

Things may be quiet, but I think Ken Smith wishes to establish a track record of quiet and conservative, but accurate and substantive press releases that USXX will be able to fulfill.

Ron
