Three Arrested as Hong Kong Police Raid Pharmacy Selling Viagra

Bloomberg News
June 22, 1998, 9:13 p.m. ET

Hong Kong, June 23 (Bloomberg) -- Three men were arrested
and 18 bottles of Pfizer Corp.'s anti-impotency drug Viagra were
seized when Hong Kong Police raided a pharmacy in the Kowloon
district of Mong Kok, the South China Morning Post newspaper
reported. The 495 pill haul was estimated to worth HK$198,000
($25,581) or HK$400 each. Wildly popular Viagra has not yet been
approved for sale here, and the men face jail terms of up to two
years and fines of HK$100,000.

A black market for the drug has sprung up in many countries
in Asia where it is not yet legal -- such as Taiwan -- and in
some markets where it is approved but access to it is restricted,
including Thailand. Sufferers say it is much more effective than
traditional Chinese cures for impotency.
