Dale,

.v90 doesn't work with x2 or flex as a v90 modem. If you want 56K you need to either:

a) wait for MSN to deploy .v90

or

b) see if you can download the "backwards" flash for your .v90 modem to flex. What brand modem do you have?

Steve

Dale,

All that means is that MSN is being slow to upgrade to V.90, so they don't want to encourage you to get a v.90 modem just yet.

I have noticed that most 56Flex ISPs are remaining 56Flex "until equipment upgrades are available" or some such. Most x2 ISPs have already upgraded, and will support both x2 and V.90 on the same phone numbers. (Eventually, x2 will be phased out.)

The issue of course, is twofold. First, USR is simply a better provider. They were ready with upgrades to their modem almost as soon as the new standard was defined. So anybody (at either end of the connection) with an x2 modem COULD upgrade very quickly with a simple flashing of the modem. It seems that the 56Flex folks have been slow in getting the upgrades out. x2 ISPs like Netcom added the functionality quite quickly and their x2 customers could do likewise.

Second, x2 modems which have been upgraded continue to support both x2 and V.90. That makes it easier on the customer if the ISP upgrades but they haven't yet, and vice-versa. Many 56Flex modems are designed so that the upgrade to V.90 eliminates 56Flex support. That makes upgrade timing a big issue.

Score one for USR and their customers.
