Finally, a response (apology) from Briefing.com: 3COM CORP (COMS) 25 7/8 -13/16: Some clarification is necessary on the earlier discussion of the 3Com earnings release date, which we wrote about on the In Play and Story Stocks pages today. In contrast to previous quarters when 3Com was very forthcoming and set dates well in advance, most of our calls were not returned and we were only told that earnings would be released sometime this week. That was all we should have written, because that's all we knew. In our view, this information was worth sharing and we stand by that decision. In the course of our work, we collect all sorts of information to which our readers do not have access, and we try to share as much of it as possible. Since our experience with 3Com this quarter was unusual, and since other Wall Street analysts covering 3Com also commented on the trouble getting an earnings release date, we judged it to be information worth reporting. Our comment, however, inappropriately suggested more sinister motives at 3Com, and that was a mistake. 3Com has now confirmed that they will report Q4 earnings after the close on Wednesday, and they have explained that the reason for the delay in setting a specific date was that this was the first year-end report made since the US Robotics merger. Just as we shouldn't have implied that 3Com would miss because they hadn't set a date, we will not now imply that they will make estimates because they have set a date. We will simply report this series of events as it occurred, because some people like to draw their own conclusions based on such events. The truth is that we probably don't know anything more about 3Com's earnings report today than we did yesterday.
