The fact is that you have NO IDEA how much money CPQ is or isn't making on sub-1k. Neither do you, but more to the point neither does CPQ. And that IS the point. Their last quarter's P/L was a disgrace, and it was due to much more than problems with forecasted demand. Explain to us please what caused the precipitous fall in their gross margin if not entry into the sub-zero market.

That's what the Unix guys said about Wintel and now they are all getting on line to kiss butt!
Your point being? Any company that doesn't do its homework on projections is a sure loser. But because a company did its analysis doesn't mean that it did it correctly, or that its forecasts were accurate. I thought you were a more logical person than this.

Techie, lots of people on this thread predicted the problems Compaq is having. It's fate came as no surprise. What has consistently confounded the nay-sayers is that Dell has thrived in an environment that was thought to be poor for PC makers.

So what's your agenda? Are you short Dell and simply trying to justify your position. Do you believe that these posts will drive people to sell their shares? Clearly, your posts are designed to conjure up any number of horrible fates for Dell shareholders, and I can't help but wonder why. All of the available evidence favors Dell's continued success, yet you persist in erecting bogeymen with patently inane arguments.

TTFN,
CTC

Techie, your Unix/Wintel example is so very weak, much like the rest of what you say.

Re: but in recent weeks he has been showing more than a casual interest in small business & consumer markets.

Recent weeks for you.. maybe. Dell has been crafting a plan
to target the power segment of home users and SOHO's for just
over a year now. The new ad campaign really kicks off this
effort. Why let GTW and CPQ dominate this market? It's
easy pickens once Dell sets it's sights.... and now it has.
Much to your displeasure, Dell will begin to take market share
in these segments.

Believe it or not, Dell has very little mindshare in the
homes of america. Everyone knows who Compaq is but many
have never heard of Dell.

Currently Dell ranks 6th in US Home desktop sales and 9th
worldwide. Another great opportunity.
