I agree that getting a good and fair comparative look at monitors is very difficult, given instore setups. I visited CompUSA here last week and their display bank of a dozen or more monitors was set up so poorly that everyone monitor showed notable ghosting....making the sales display completely worthless IMO. The poor clerk could only shrug his shoulders. I then went to a local PC manufacturer (corporate oriented) who sells Acer's, which I've read were quite good...they don't even display what they sell and weren't willing to set one up for a single customer...perhaps understandable but no help either. All of which leaves one to rely on product reviews and word of mouth. Viewsonics appear to be very popular in stores here (Houston), esp. their current 17" models (773), and many can be seen in a variety of setups. Also Sony's, but I can't detect a major diff. between the shadow mask and ap. grill sharpness (except for those little lines)...perhaps there's a difference in day to day use.
