[NEXTLINK Hits 100,000 Installed Access Line Milestone]

BELLEVUE, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 30, 1998--

-- Fast growing McCaw CLEC continues aggressive expansion plan --

NEXTLINK Communications, a facilities based provider of telecommunications services recently installed its 100,000 access line.

In April, the company reported 18 percent quarterly access line growth in the first quarter and 164 percent year-over-year quarterly growth in revenue and plans to report second quarter results in late July.

"Reaching the 100,000 mark is a very important moment for NEXTLINK," said NEXTLINK Chief of Local Exchange Services Jan Loichle. "Over the past two years we have quietly built a business that is adding as many new on-switch access lines, on a per switch basis, as anyone in the entire industry."

"What makes this dramatic growth exciting is that the overwhelming majority of our installed lines are on our own switches. Unlike reselling service, on-switch additions give us more control of the services we offer to customers and better margins for our business," continued Loichle. "This milestone is a monument to the 1,600 NEXTLINK employees who have worked so hard, and a validation of our increased expansion plan."

NEXTLINK began offering commercial service in July 1996 and reached the 50,000 line install mark 18 months later in December 1997. In the six months following, the company has installed an additional 50,000 lines bringing the total to more than 100,000. The company has more than tripled its installed lines since completing its initial public offering of stock in September of last year.

In the first quarter, the company announced plans to build networks in areas serving 21 million addressable business lines, including the majority of the top twenty markets in the United States. NEXTLINK is investing heavily in local telecommunications infrastructure and controls more than 2,000 miles of high capacity fiber optic cable containing more than 141,000 fiber miles throughout the United States.
