who care's how much it can degrade if I can't get xDSL to start with.

Steve, I care. I want video news clips, sports highlights, listen in Intel stock meetings, 3D reviews of the car I am going to buy etc. We need very high bandwidth otherwise the internet can't continue to progress. Dale

Steve -
Sure, a bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush - but I can get ADSL service at my home now (SWBell). My sense is that cable companies will have a good run on this since they already have early penetration access and can service maybe 4M customers from their existing infrastructure. But given the going rate for cable modem access ($50 month) versus cable access for standard TV which can support about 1000 times as many users with the same head end gear ($50 / month), where will the money come from if cable is to expand infrastructure to support the new access? they are already under a huge debt load for their original franchise.
