True, ZP. I didn't explore this with Plextor; like all
of us I have to pick my battles. The drive expired
after its 2 year warrantee expired, and even I wouldn't expect
Plextor to replace it under those circumstances, though I
tend to raise Cain with manufacturers over product
performance. In this case
I just didn't feel it was worth pursuing. I merely
note that it ran hotter than is reasonable
(MUCH hotter than any other CD I've ever owned, SCSI or
IDE) so the failure didn't surprise me, and it's enough
to steer me clear of the brand.

Perhaps someday I'll give them a second chance, which is
my general policy. But I'd need a good reason. Meanwhile
I have plenty of CD drives
which have given better service and never one do worse,
so I'm in no hurry. Why borrow trouble? I get enough
for free <G>.

What options do we have? If I buy a product from a manufacturer and it fails I may or may not buy another one. If I buy again and it fails I surely would not buy from the manufacturer again. If someone else relates their experience with a product it is at least one piece of information that I did not know before. My only stipulation would be that it is factual.


At least one person has problems with anything. very unscientific and useless information for a techical perspective.

If a manufacturer wants to counter incomplete information they should just publish reliability stats..If they have a reliable product what do they have to lose? I for one would be more inclined to buy a product from a manufacturer that is forthcoming with information on their products. The availability of information on a product is indeed a deciding factor for me. I bypass many potentially good products for lack of information.

and many are good at providing info but not failure analysis info. Please show me one....

I have only heard positive comments about Plextor drives. It is almost unanimously selected as the drive to buy on the sites I frequent. I find it useful knowledge that at least one person has had a problem.

why??? do you think there are actually perfect products???

If Spots still has the drive perhaps Plextor would buy it back and replace it for the inconvenience. It sounds like the drive was defective. I doubt they are involved with planned obsolescence. If they were to take apart the drive perhaps they might learn something and spare another customer the inconvenience. Spots might change his mind about Plextor if they were to act in such a manner. I certainly would favor a manufacturer that showed an interest in their products.


very little benefit for the manufacturer to replace out of warranty products. The consumer purchased the product knowing the terms of the sale. depending on your size or value as a customer these things ahppen all the time but when your talking one individual the bottom line is that you are NOISE to that company. may not seem ideal to you the consumer but its a proven method of making money in this VERY VERY price competitive business.
