I don't think there is a perfect model. What exists is what the majority will put up with. Most Americans don't mind quite a bit of wealth disparity if it means they get economic freedom. The Swedes put up with a nanny state because they are willing to trade autonomy for security.

Clearly too much "nannying" runs up against the walls of what is allowed by bond markets, but up to that point... whatever the national psyche is comfortable with.
