< So they used Irish workers >

Probably true. The Irish were often used instead of slaves because they had no value. The best cited example I know of was the use of Irish for powder monkeys.

The "powder monkey" was the one who handled, placed and set off the explosions -- whether it was for mining, construction, or whatever because they were dispensable and slaves were not.

My wife is the maven on this stuff; just made the mistake of asking her and got a history lesson.

To abbreviate the lesson, the most prominent example of this were the levees around the Mississippi. The people in charge of construction there would have to buy the slaves and house them. The Irish were less costly. Besides, if they died there would be another one waiting on the Nor'lins docks.

EDIT My wife's maiden name is Cavalero. She has no vested interest, therefore, in manufacturing stories about the Irish.

The Italians, maybe, not the Irish.
