U.S. Census Bureau Will Use Oracle(R) Database Server, Tools to Expand System Agency Will Use Oracle Software to Gather, Disseminate Vital U.S. Data June 23, 1998 08:01 AM SUITLAND, Md., June 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Oracle Corp. ORCL today announced that the U.S. Bureau of the Census, the primary source of basic statistics concerning the population and economy of the nation, will work with Oracle as its supplier of database management software and related tools. The bureau will license enterprise-wide Oracle software that includes Oracle(R) Database Server, Oracle Parallel Server, ConText(R) option and Oracle Application Server; and Oracle Developer, Oracle Designer and Oracle Discoverer(TM) tools. Oracle products will enable the Bureau of the Census to expand its existing financial and administrative systems and surveying systems. In addition, many key programs for the Decennial 2000 census project, including data capture and data dissemination, also will depend on Oracle. The Census Bureau chose Oracle because of the scalability of the Oracle database products, their ability to operate on a variety of hardware platforms, and the functionality of Oracle tools. The Oracle Database Server, with its high scalability, is slated to accommodate the bureau's peak of 6,000 concurrent users for logistical work and support pertaining to Decennial 2000. The Decennial 2000 project for the 2000 census involves data collection, processing, editing, analysis and dissemination, as well as administrative matters concerning the bureau's field staff. The bureau also plans to use the Oracle Database Server, ConText option and Oracle Application Server as part of its Data Access and Dissemination Systems (DADS) effort to distribute a large volume of data (250 GBs) on the Internet. The Decennial 2000 census Oracle databases will house 3 million applicants and serve as the basis for payroll processing of 350,000 employees at the census peak. "Basing our systems on Oracle will enable us to more easily collect and disseminate top-quality statistical information about the people and economy of the United States," said Mark Mildorf, the Census Bureau contracting officer's technical representative. "Oracle is a good choice when it comes to Web-enablement of the database and associated applications. I can get my information out internally, Web-enable my applications and deploy them easily to hundreds, even thousands, of desktops."
