CDG Announces Significant Advances in the Evolution of cdmaOne Technology Will Provide Advanced Capabilities in 1999 SINGAPORE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 23, 1998--The CDMA Development Group (CDG) Tuesday announced major advances in the capabilities of cdmaOne technology. As part of an aggressive initiative, the CDG and its members will develop enhanced capabilities and provide third-generation services well in advance of the ITU's IMT-2000 timelines. These advances will be completely compatible with today's cdmaOne systems. ''The CDG is very excited about this initiative,'' said Perry LaForge, executive director of the CDG. ''Operators deploying cdmaOne will be able to flexibly enhance their systems to provide advanced features and services as the market demands them. In effect, cdmaOne carriers will be able to configure their networks to provide 3G services when it is most appropriate for their customers.'' The current version of cdmaOne offers a platform on which advanced services can be built. Several key advancements will be available by the end of 1999, such as: -- Doubling of voice capacity. -- 144 Kbps data capability. -- Advanced packet data services. -- Greatly extended battery life and improved sleep-mode technology, with a minimum of a doubling of stand-by time. A major objective of this initiative is to provide operators with flexibility in deploying these capabilities. This will allow carriers to choose where and when they provide these advances, while continuing to benefit from investments in current systems. This advanced version of cdmaOne will be completely compatible with IS-95 revisions A and B. This also will allow cdmaOne operators to implement IS-95B as part of their evolution strategy. The enhanced system provides a smooth evolution from IS-95A- and B-based systems by building upon existing cdmaOne systems. Other evolution objectives include: -- Evolution of network hardware, network software and handsets to support these new capabilities and services. -- Coexistence of current and new versions of cdmaOne handsets. -- Service transparency for existing handsets. -- Use of the same spectrum allocation. -- Ability to hand off between versions. The CDG is a nonprofit trade association formed to foster the worldwide development, implementation and use of cdmaOne. The 100 member companies of the CDG include many of the world's largest wireless operators and equipment manufacturers. The primary activities of the CDG include development of cdmaOne features and services, public relations, education and seminars, regulatory affairs, and international support. Currently there are more than 500 individuals working within various CDG subcommittees on cdmaOne-related matters.
