When MD said that Dell could compete in the sub zero market, I don't think he meant competing in the retail channel. I think he meant that Dell could produce less fully featured systems and sell them (over the internet?) and the problem was that there simply isn't enough return here to make it interesting. It's not true of course that all buyers of sub zero systems require hand holding not that you suggested that. Your point is well taken that Dell's production methods aren't really suited to extracting the economies that producing in volume requires here.

I can't quite agree with you that CPQ's distribution system in the retail market is efficient. My view is that their centralized pricing model - one price fits all distributors, is inefficient. I'll try to post something on this.
